China’s Esports Industry Revenue Approaches £3 Billion

On December 11, 2024, the Electronic Sports Committee of the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association (ESC) released the2024 China Esports Industry Reportduring the annual conference in Beijing. The report reveals a robust performance in the esports sector, with total revenues reaching27.568 billion RMB(approximately£2.97 billion), reflecting a 4.62% increasecompared to the previous year.**** Key Insights from the Report:

  • Revenue Composition: The bulk of revenue is derived from live streaming of esports content, which constitutes 80.84% of total earnings. Event revenues and esports club revenues each contribute 8.75%, while other income sources account for 4.04%.

  • User Base Trends: The esports audience in China remains steady at around 490 million users, showing a slight growth of 0.42%. This trend suggests that the market is reaching saturation, indicating future growth may rely more on user engagement rather than just increasing numbers.

  • Popular Game Genres: Shooter games lead the market with a share of 26.1%, followed by Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games at 15.2%, and sports simulation games at 12.0%. Mobile gaming is particularly dominant, capturing a substantial 57.6% of the market compared to client-based games at just 26.1%.

  • Event Statistics: A total of 124 competitive esports events were held across various levels in the country, with 58% being fully offline events. This represents a slight decline from the previous year's total of 127 events.

  • International Engagement and Collaborations: The report highlights an increase in international esports events hosted in China, including significant tournaments like the 2024 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational and the CS2 Shanghai Major.
